Your Pool Is Clean—But Is It Safe?

Understanding Water Balance Beyond Just Chlorine

It is easy to assume that if your pool water looks clear and smells faintly of chlorine, it is safe to swim in. But water clarity and chlorine alone do not tell the whole story. The truth is, pool water can look fine on the surface while still being chemically unbalanced—and that imbalance can lead to skin irritation, equipment damage, algae growth, and even health risks.

At The Pool Chemist, we help Hudson Valley pool owners keep their water not just clean, but balanced. Here’s why water balance matters and what to watch for beyond chlorine levels.

The Role of Chlorine—And Its Limitations

Chlorine is the most common sanitizer used in pool water. It kills bacteria and viruses, helps prevent algae, and keeps water safe for swimmers. However, chlorine effectiveness depends heavily on other water chemistry factors.

If your water’s pH or stabilizer levels are off, for example, your chlorine might not work as intended—even if you have the right amount.

That is why chlorine is just one part of a much bigger picture.

The Big Four of Water Balance

To keep your pool water healthy, comfortable, and safe for your equipment, you need to monitor four key components in addition to chlorine:

1. pH Level

  • Ideal range: 7.4 to 7.6
  • pH measures how acidic or basic your pool water is.
  • Low pH (acidic): Can irritate eyes and skin, corrode metal components, and damage pool surfaces.
  • High pH (basic): Can cause cloudy water, reduce chlorine effectiveness, and lead to scale buildup.

2. Total Alkalinity

  • Ideal range: 80 to 120 ppm
  • Alkalinity helps stabilize your pH levels. If your alkalinity is off, your pH will swing up and down unpredictably.
  • Keeping alkalinity in range reduces chemical usage and helps maintain a stable pool environment.

3. Stabilizer (Cyanuric Acid)

  • Ideal range: 30 to 50 ppm for outdoor pools
  • Stabilizer protects chlorine from being destroyed by UV rays from the sun.
  • Too little: Chlorine disappears quickly.
  • Too much: Can “lock up” chlorine, making it ineffective even when it is present.

4. Calcium Hardness

  • Ideal range: 200 to 400 ppm
  • This refers to the amount of dissolved calcium in your pool.
  • Too low: Water becomes corrosive and can damage plaster, tile, and metal fixtures.
  • Too high: Leads to cloudy water and scale deposits on surfaces and equipment.

Why Balance Matters for Swimmers and Equipment

Balanced water protects more than just your guests—it protects your pool itself. Unbalanced water can:

  • Shorten the lifespan of pumps, filters, and heaters
  • Damage vinyl liners or plaster surfaces
  • Lead to costly repairs or even early equipment replacement
  • Cause itchy skin, red eyes, and dry hair for swimmers

In short, proper water balance is a critical part of responsible pool ownership, not just a technical detail.

Algae Prevention in Peak Season Summer in the Hudson Valley brings everything you want from pool season: warm days, longer evenings, and plenty of time to relax and recharge. But it also brings one of the most persistent threats to water clarity—algae blooms. Algae thrive in warm, humid conditions—exactly what summer in New York delivers. Can a pool actually be too clean? At The Pool Chemist, we get this question more often than you might think. And the short answer is yes—over-chlorination is real, and it can create more problems than it solves. Here is what you need to know about chlorine levels, the risks of overusing chemicals, and how to keep your water balanced and swim-ready.

Seasonal Shifts, Specialized Care Owning a pool in the Hudson Valley comes with unique advantages—lush scenery, four-season beauty, and the chance to enjoy your backyard in every way during the warmer months. Clear Water, Hidden Problems A sparkling pool may look like a picture of health, but appearances can be deceiving. Just because the water is clear doesn’t mean it’s safe, balanced, or functioning as it should. At The Pool Chemist, we’ve seen it all—pools that look pristine on the surface but hide chemical imbalances that can lead to cloudy water, damaged equipment, and even health risks. Understanding what’s beneath the surface is key to maintaining a truly healthy pool. The Myth of Clear Water Many pool owners rely on visual cues alone to assess their pool’s condition. If the water is blue and you can see the bottom, everything must be fine—right? Not necessarily. Clear water can still harbor chemical imbalances that aren’t immediately visible. In fact, the most problematic pools are often the ones that look “okay” but haven’t had their chemistry professionally tested in weeks, or even months.

Is Your Pool Showing Its Age? Owning a pool is an investment in comfort, recreation, and home value—but over time, even the best-built pools will start to show their age. Whether you’ve noticed cosmetic issues or subtle changes in how your pool functions, it might be time to consider a restoration. At The Pool Chemist, we’ve been helping Hudson Valley homeowners revive their pools since 1977. We specialize in restoring both the beauty and performance of pools—without cutting corners. Here are the most common signs that your pool may be due for professional restoration. 1. Surface Stains, Cracks, or Peeling Plaster If your pool’s interior surface is stained, cracked, or beginning to peel, it’s more than just an eyesore. Over time, chemical exposure, UV rays, and general wear can break down the plaster surface or vinyl liner. This not only affects appearance—it can also compromise the structure and make cleaning and chemical balancing more difficult. We offer a variety of resurfacing options, from traditional white plaster to upgraded finishes like Diamond Brite or Terrazzo, which offer better durability and visual appeal. For vinyl liner pools, we provide expert liner replacements using top-tier manufacturers backed by meaningful warranties.

From Green to Clean You’ve waited all winter to jump back in—and instead of sparkling blue water, your pool has transformed into a murky, green mess. While frustrating, a green pool is a common issue many homeowners face, especially during the spring and early summer. But what exactly causes this unwelcome transformation, and how can you fix it quickly and safely? At The Pool Chemist, we specialize in restoring your pool to perfect health. Let’s break down what’s really happening beneath the surface, why DIY fixes often fall short, and how our expert services can get your backyard oasis back on track—fast. What Causes Green Pool Water? The primary culprit behind green pool water is algae overgrowth, typically caused by poor water chemistry. Algae spores exist in the environment naturally and can enter your pool through wind, rain, or even on swimsuits and pool equipment. Once they’re in, they thrive in water with: Low chlorine levels Poor circulation or filtration High phosphate levels Warm temperatures Imbalanced pH or alkalinity When your pool’s chemical balance is off—even slightly—algae can multiply rapidly. In just a day or two, your clear water can turn green and cloudy.

Why Cloudy Pool Water is a Health Concern Crystal-clear pool water is not only inviting but also a sign of proper maintenance and safety. When your pool water turns cloudy, it can be both unappealing and a potential health risk. Understanding the underlying causes is essential for effective treatment and prevention. Common Causes of Cloudy Pool Water 1. Imbalanced Water Chemistry Maintaining the correct chemical balance is crucial for water clarity. Imbalances in pH, chlorine levels, alkalinity, or calcium hardness can lead to cloudiness. For instance, high pH levels can reduce chlorine’s effectiveness, allowing contaminants to accumulate. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ) emphasizes that improper pH levels can make chlorine less effective at killing germs, leading to cloudy water
